Generation of Women

Whilst I sat in the April sunshine on Sunday chatting to my Mother-in-Law I discovered an interesting fact- I come from a very privileged position. I grew up in an almost exclusively female household with a Maternal Grandmother and Mother who bestowed on me the knowledge that "Womens Work", so frowned upon in todays society, is "skilled" work and knowledge that we as women should revere and pass to the next generation.

My Mother-in-Law grew up in a small family surrounded by male role models, she moved to England from Northern Ireland and had her first child away from support. When I said I learned all my mothering and household skills from my Mother and Grandmother, she said I was very, very lucky.

It started me thinking, is what I see as normal actually very rare. How many young girls out there become parents will little or no knowledge of how to basic tasks like cook a meal from scratch? How many of their mothers were unable to help as they had "winged it" themselves? Is it any wonder they seek joy outside the home in Nightclubs and through buying the latest fashion or gadget?

If we don't pass on the knowledge we have how will our children keep this knowledge alive, how will our Grandchildren learn the importance of patience and the joy of creating a warm safe environment for their own children?

With this realisation came another thought, what am I doing to help young girls, like my own daughters, how can I pass on my knowledge to a wider audience? I suppose my business does this somewhat, I show Mums how to play, but is this enough. I'm hoping that by increasing my knowledge in Pregnancy and Postnatal Yoga, I can make a difference to the young women out there with so much potential to shine as amazing women in our society.

So what can we do? What would you like to pass on to the new Mothers out there? How difficult it can be but how rewarding it is? The recipes that were your life saver on manic days? Or just that there is some where they can turn to for advice and now that someone else has tried it and tweaked it to make it work?
