Baby Yoga...err What's that?!

I asked my husband what he thought a good blog subject would be, his answer was "why not blog on the first question everyone asks you...Baby Yoga...err What's that?!" So here goes....

Any little one up to the age of  two and a half I would call a baby. After that they are very independent and prefer to show Mum exactly what they are capable of. My baby classes start with little ones of about 6 weeks old. I would encourage Mums to take a Baby Massage Course with their little ones too, it helps you bond  and gives Mum a lot more confidence handling her baby.

The aim of Baby Yoga is to help Mum do what she is naturally good at. It shows you that talking to and playing with your baby is key to their development and important for you too.

At the start of a class Mums are encouraged to talk directly to their babies and let them know what they are doing. Story lines are very similar to Toddler classes, simple fun stories that can be repeated by Mum when she gets home. Most of the moves are performed on the floor, with Mum kneeling or lying by the little one and massaging and moving their limbs in time to the music and story.

I like to introduce nursery rhymes and songs that can be sung at home, and I encourage Mum to try some moves at home with a simple fact sheet on basic poses for that days class. Crawling babies are amazingly good fun because you can get them acting out Five Little Ducks and joining in with clapping songs.

One very important element is the introduction of textures and sensations to small babies, I like to use feathers for tickling and butterflies so babies can feel cool air being blown on them. Here you can see the gorgeous Evie learning what it feels like to have her toes tickled with a feather.

At the end of a class I encourage Mums to lie with the babies and enjoy the relaxation session. It gives Mum permission to focus completely on her baby without anything interrupting.

Baby Yoga, yeah I know sounds a little Kooky but it's a brilliant bonding activity.
