Relaxation Sessions for Children

My idea  of heaven is a class of 30 2 year olds all participating in a 6 minute meditation.

Now some of you reading this will scoff and say "Impossible", but I assure you it is most definitely possible. I agree that when you first start to show children how to meditate it can be hard to believe that 2 minutes is possible let alone 6 minutes. But I assure you it is.

Like adults who are learning to mediate initially you fidget, everything distracts you, other people breathing, wondering what other people are doing, are you the only one with your eyes closed? Children are no different.

The added difficulty with children is that in the average day most children they have very little opportunity just to switch off. If they want down time they have games consoles, or  televisions and computers. Rarely do we allow children to entertain themselves, we often use the television as a babysitter when we just need 5 minutes.

If instead of being allowed to turn on an electronic entertainment device we taught our children how to grow through meditation, it would be so much more useful.

I start my 2 year olds lying on their backs, eyes closed, focusing on a little duck on their tummys. This gives them a focus that is related to them and not someone near them. They are encouraged to listen to relaxing music and imagine the story we have just created in the class.

Initially everyone fidgets, then by our 3rd class we can easily get to 4 minutes of uninterrupted meditation. After a term of 6 weeks we are up to 6 minutes and Mums relate how much calmer their little ones are.

Try it at home. Put a towel on the floor, lie down next to your little one and listen to so calming music. Just try to do it for the length of the song, and see how much better both of you feel by the end of it.

As children get a little older it is possible to progress to sitting meditation with focus on breathing and heartbeat. Meditation is highly recommended for everyone, mum, dad and little ones :)
