Slow Down! Try choosing the slower option.
When I met my husband, the first thing my son did was put on a cartoon he loves, my husband sat mesmerised and finally said "I have no idea what's going on, it'll all moves to fast" This comment made me pause for thought, was he right. I thought about it hard and long and looked at the old cartoons I used to watch "Hong Kong Phooey", "The Pink Panther", "Top Cat", and then the cartoons my son watches "Ben 10", "Chowder" and "Generator Rex"...my husband was right. When you think about the films we grew up with the old black and whites like "Citizen Kane" they move at a slower pace than todays "Fast and the Furious", their message and stories were simple and they allowed the watcher to relax and enjoy rather than come away with a pounding heart and unable to sleep. Is it any wonder that in an life already busy with out of home activities, nursery, and learning the ropes of being a person that fast paced cartoons do little more than raise the level of stress in our children. I understand there have been studies which show that carefully selected classic cartoons can help ease pain in young children, the slow paced humour, helps ease thing like drawing blood. So give yourself and your little ones a break, carefully select your viewing, especially before bed, choose something light hearted and funny, that leaves you with a warm, relaxed feeling. I think you'll find that your general stress levels will drop and you'll find it easier to meditate and relax. |
