This week I've taught a lovely age range of children, it still amazes me how quickly children develop physically from the age of eighteen months upwards.
On Wednesday I had a class of beautiful eight year old girls. Initially I had a slight moment of panic when I realised that there was no electricity for my Ipod speakers and I was going to have to lead the class without the accompaniment of music. Music is an integral part of my sessions usually and a brilliant asset when it comes to calming down or livening up a class of up to 30 children. So you can imagine the lovely nervous tummy feelings I got realising I was going to have to wing it. As the class was all of one age it turned out to be easier than I thought. Eight year olds have vivid imaginations that they are ready and willing to share with anyone who will listen. So our Bee Adventure was full of amazing suggestions and lots of extra yoga poses were introduced to accommodation their creativity. Admittedly the Relaxation session was a little harder as they were still excited from the bee finger puppets I'd provided, and we did get lots of giggling, but all in all it was great fun. Yesterday I ran a class for two year olds. The same story, this time with music, but with smaller children, especially as it was their first class I kept the moves to positions they are already familiar with, like Downward Dog, and Cat. I also find that putting a few finger rhymes into the story helps enormously. From the age of eighteen months children develop physically very quickly. It is easy to spot the differences if you teach a mixed class of eighteen months to two year olds. Balance becomes a lot better at two, and finger dexterity is amazingly more precise. I love the fact that a simple story line can be adapted for any of the ages that I teach and that all the children enjoy themselves whatever their age :) |
