Time For a Little Creating

Have you ever daydreamed about days gone by? Eras before your time, where life was full of simple pleasures and society ran on morals and rules?

This morning my son and I settled down to watch Just William, based on the books by Richmal Crompton. It made my son howl with laughter and set me to thinking, thank goodness this adaptation shows some of the realities.

When you imagine the time in which that the Just William books are set, you imagine a society where children were children, they knew their place, everyone knew table manners, and spoke with the upmost politeness. In reality womens lives were hard there were few if any household gadgets to help keep the home clean and tidy. Children were still as chatty, outgoing and boisterous as they are today, and they played simpler games purely because they did not have the distraction of electronic pals like Xboxes.

Our love of books and programmes set in a bygone era of propriety is because we dream that life was better, simpler and happier back then, however what we need to remember is these books and programmes are pure fiction. If we want a simpler and happier life it's up to us to make it that way.

The truth is let our children free for an afternoon in an open space and they will play uncomplicated games just look...

Our lives today are as complicated as we choose to make them. Give a child a fields and a kite, or a tree to climb and they have simple fun.

So next time you have a free Sunday afternoon why not take a stroll through the park, get the bikes out for a ride or just climb a tree, you'll find yourself back in an era you dream about, but the best bit is this is YOUR life not a piece of fiction.
